A few months ago I bought a second-hand 1/6 scale Armortek Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz.222 the rebuild will be done in two parts first will be the Fahrgestell second will be the Panzeraufbau this will include the Turm and 2cm Flak 38.
Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of the Panzerspähwagen before I started the rebuild this picture with my Kübelwagen shows the size difference.

The project begins with stripping everything down to single components stripping of original paint and readying for various layers of paint, all alloy parts are fist coated with acid etch primer then red oxide and finally dunkelgrau RAL7021 this will be changed at a later date to dunkelgelb RAL7028

Once everything was painted all parts were laid out ready for rebuild all screws that required Locktite 222 had this applied during the rebuild

I am settling down to enjoy this (pass the crisps and the beer) ;)

Cheers

I will see what I can do but my aim is to build a reasonable representation of the Panzerspähwagen, This is the re-built Fahrgestell ready for testing at Munster in a few weeks time.

Hi,
good to see the forum coming back to life with some great build blogs. Nice clean build & workshop, look forward to following this.

Can I ask a technical question please. I know from reading from your build & the Armortex forum builds that you all use acid etch primer on the ally build parts. Is the paint you are using from a rattle can & can I ask where's the best place to purchase acid etch primmer. I bought some in the past from Halfords car shop, but not sure how good their acid etch paint compares.

Thanks Gary D

Gary I use U-Pol Acid #8 this comes from Halfords in a rattle can I have just bought a new can which as £20 you don’t need it on steel just the alloy, I use this first then a coat of red oxide then the top coat works a treat.

It will be a month or so before I post more detail work on the 222, this is now in a running condition ready for display at Munster in a few weeks time.

Thanks Mark,
I'll grab a can of U-Pol Acid #8 at the weekend. I've used this before but can't remember it being so expensive. Oh well, suspension parts need it.

Cheers Gary D

Gary I bought a few cans back in 2010 it was £12 per can then, I was surprised at the price when I bought the latest one.
The 222 is now back together and has been tested ready for Munster in a few weeks’ time when I return I will start detailing the Panzeraufbau and give the whole model a full respray.

While the weather has been nice over the weekend I took the Panzerspähwagen out into the garden for some pictures complete with x2 dolly’s I have put together for the crew the commander in the Sumpftarnung is a Feldwebel the other in the reed green denims, the Panzerspähwagen has divisional markings of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Lehr-Abteilung 130 by the Normandy campaign Panzer-Aufklärungs-Lehr-Abteilung 130 was using Sd.Kfz.234/2 Puma, I have found pictures of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Lehr with Sd.Kfz.222 but these must have been handed in when they received the Puma.

Hey Steve, The front dif is filled with heavy weight oil.
The center & rear diffs were locked.
I am sure Mark can provide specifics to you.

Unfortunately during recent tests I didn’t take any action shots of the 222 traversing hills, uneven ground and mud but I have a few after the event pictures in my workshop.

So works commences on the Panzerspähwagen with the Panzeraufbau completely stripped down and in the process of being prepared ready for reassembly and brazing the Panzeraufbau to give more strength, to strip the paint down to bare metal I use standard thinners this works rather well.

Are you going to add a second skin to the upper sides to get the overhang ?

Adrian, not sure just yet this I’m thinking about, now that I have brazed the panzeraufbau there is a lot of clean up sanding down the metal work ready for priming.
