Plans Packs For Scratchbuilders.

Post by Humpy » Thu Feb 22, 2007 1:09 pm

This question has been asked many times before by people wishing to scratchbuild there own models so I thought I'd post this as a Sticky!

The Tank Museum at Bovington, Dorset, UK, offers a plans pack service for most popular Tanks. Apparently they are quite good but not easy to get hold of! Follow the link below to see how you get hold of them.

For Your Information

We still have full plans and detailed drawing sets available for the Panzer 1V.
These drawing include assembly diagrams and instructions, for a model which can be built from castings or machined from solid stock. Tricky bits, like track links are also available as finished parts.

in the works -

a plans pack for a Cromwell Mk4
and (yes laugh all you like) a PZiii J

at present i and doing the drawings to be printed on A0 so they can be build like you would form a RC plane plans-pack.
it is looking quite expensive to print, so i may just give away the electronic version when they are closer.

it will contain all the part numbers and supplier contacts, so there should be a minimal number of nightmares

more soon,
Kieren

if anyone wants advice feel free to drop me a mail, or call for a chat - 07973 868035 (i can pretend i'm popular then)

The Plans packs are fairly easy to obtain, just contact the Librarian at Bovington and they'll get you what you want. They used to have a list up on the website and as far as I know they'll be posting it up again soon. But just contact them as they'll actually make you up a plans pack for pretty much anything you can think off.

The recently sent me a plans pack for a Centaur Dozer and the Comet (I have an Armortek Comet on order). I've also had the plans pack for various Mk's of Universal Carrier and various Mk's of Cromwell from them and this enabled me to start scratch building a couple of 1/6th Cromwells out of styrene. Of-course I haven't yet got to the running gear proper but I'm pretty sure I can figure that out when the time comes. I've already got a couple ideas for the sprocket.

So, just contact the guys at the Library, if they don't have a plans pack they are always happy to make one up and they'll take your CC details over the phone (or you can send them a cheque) and they'll get it right off to you.

Pete,

As for cheap, reliable running gear, you'd be hard pushed to do better than go down the same route that Kieren and Ray have used for their models. Have a chat with them when and if you can I promise it'd be most enlightening :)

PS Nice work on the Cromwell!

Thanks Humpy,

I've already got the sprockets cut from PVC and have found a small aluminum pudding dish that is exactly the right shape for the hub of the sprocket and really looks the part too. It's a little tall but that's a good thing as I can cut and bend it to form a flange that the sprocket will bolt to.

I've found a solder spool that's nearly a spot on match for the idler. The bell cranks for the road wheels I've already carved out of 21mm thick PVC (hard work that) and I've made my own road springs from 2 different dia's of pvc tube and some springs I found at Lee Springs. All I need do now is to find a way to make the dish-shaped road wheels...but that's all part of the challenge and like everything else I'll probably find a pie dish in Debenhams that's ideal.

These first two are purely static models as I don't think the sheet styrene would hold up to the torsion's inflicted on it by RC'ing it. However, PVC sheet cut to shape and held together with PVC weld and some aluminum angle bar would be plenty strong for RC and that's what I have in mind for the Centaur Dozer that I hope to knock out before the summer evaporates...I'm a softy and don't like working in the garage in the winter!

...as promised here is a copy of the old list of plans packs that Bovington used to have on their site. No doubt this will come back when they've finished sorting the web site out. Prices will most likely have increased when it does come back, but for now here's what they offered previously.
We also have a large selection of Drawings Packs available (which are not necessarily so clear or detailed – which is reflected in the price). If you are interested in a vehicle which does not appear on this list – please phone The Library at the Tank Museum (01929 405096 & choose the number for ‘Archive & Library” when prompted)"
