1/6 Kubelwagen R/C conversion

Post by blythmags » Sat Nov 22, 2008 6:32 pm

Hi everyone......
I have just got my hands on a Dragon 1/6 Kubelwagen and wondered whether anyone has converted a similar model to r/c ?.
Of course, my next question is what is the best (and easiest !) way of undertaking this conversion ?.
I have heard that buying a cheap 1/6 r/c car and pulling this to bits to take the electrics and radio gear etc off it would be the most cost effective ?.
Does anyone have a set of simple plans they could share ?
Thanks in anticipation
John... :)

John,

A few of the guys have done this now and they do use an RC car as a donor vehicle for the drive system. Unfortunately I don't know what they used off the top of my head but no doubt they'll put a reply on here when they see your posting! Good luck with the conversion. Jim Cusworth did his complete with sounds and animatronic dollies :)

I believe Rivet used a Tamiya Gravel Hound as the donor vehicle, for the 3 he did (Mark correct me if I got it wrong again)

I did something like this with my adaption (Gravel hound was what I used... right width)
Just a simple cut and bolt on. Glue a hex onto the original wheels... bingo...

Cheers

No mine was a Blue stickered one!!!

It was the "build it up youself kit" kit so not sure if there is a difference with a built up one but a hacksaw has no friends anyways

Cheers

Hi John, here is what I used.... to the colour 1/10 RC Car Series No.328 (ITEM No. 58328)
Image

All i did was build the gearbox's up thinking I could keep it 4WD but that did not work out. So RWD it is.

Cutting the Gravel Hound tub apart and grinding down some of the plastic tub is easy enough with a dremel and as far as the wheels go I put them in a vice and drilled right through the middle with a drill bit big enough so that a 5mm axle nut (or 4mm whatever comes with the kit) fitted into the gap.

Bolting on the chassis to the Dragon Kubel leaves the Hounds shocks to keep it altogether and supported. Like having four mounting points front and four rear. There are some more pics on my website under "Projects" that will show rear shock mounts. The kit front suspension seems to have the look of a real Kubel but I am not good enough to make a real version so this sufficed for me.

Tamiya kits have a 12mm Axel drive hex with a slot for a little pin and I built up a plastic dam around the hex with scraps of styrene to add strength then attached the hex firstly with cyanocrylate glue, finished off with 2 part epoxy. As long as you get it all straight and true you shouldnt get too much wheel wobble. (3 out of 4 aint bad hehe)

Hope that helps

Cheers

Hi Brett........

Thanks for the advice and time you have taken to explain this.

UKTC: Is it just me that is filled with fear and trepidation when relatively straight forward instructions like these given by Brett, still results in me feeling like I should just stick with Lego ??!!

Yeah my biggest fear was the two hundred Kiwi I paid for the kit I was about to hacksaw in half.
Pulling apart the factory glued Kubel was easier than I thought. Just ease the parts off gently.
The glue used is crappola. If you are lucky some nice person will show you pics of the wiring layout they have done.
I always find it much easier to look at pics than reading about it but then I am such a simple person. :happy-smileyflower:
